The Whole Damn Pie

From Volunteer Opp to Director of Ops

Episode Summary

Every couple of weeks, Amalia Martino, CEO and President of Seattle-based ad agency, The Vida Agency, sits down with a wide variety of friends, peers and other professionals. She sure does know some colorful folks who walk to the walk. This week’s episode of The Whole Damn Pie is no different. Sheree Gibson is a mother of 4 who, at first glance, seemed without a path as a young adult. In reality, her path was there. She had been blazing it from very early in her modest working career. It was her calling, however, that came later. That came from self-discovery, and a decisive conversation she had one afternoon with her husband. An important recurring theme that came up during Amalia’s 30-minute chat with her “friend and inspiration” was the idea of “pivoting.” If little else, Sheree points out, during this pandemic businesses learned- if they didn’t know already- the dire importance of being able to pivot and adapt to changing circumstances. Join us as Amalia and Sheree discuss gender disparities, the importance of nurturing relationships, and how to turn those relationships into work opportunities that keep growing, and more! Only on The Whole Damn Pie!

Episode Notes

Sheree is super-well organized. When Amalia first met her at a kids’ soccer match, she noticed that all of Sheree’s Tupperware, full of prepared food, were all color-coded for each of her family members attending the game. In fact, even Amalia’s daughter took notice, too, and said, “Mom, you could learn something from her.”

She turns 40 this year. (Amalia welcomes her into the club with her usual cool and nonchalant demeanor: “Wow! Congratulations. Welcome! Because the 40s are fucking awesome!”)

Unpaid volunteer work (a lot of it) honed her work ethic and marketable skills.

Director of Operations at Caffe Ladro for nearly 8 years.

Wakes up at 3:45am, gets out of bed at 4:15am, and tries to be at work by 5:30am. (Editor’s note: How much coffee does it take Sheree to do this?)

By the time you read this, Sheree will have likely moved on to her next opportunity as Chief of Operations at Lady Yum, which she describes as a “whimsical business” built on macarons, champagne, and mischief. (Sounds like a good time!)
